Plant of the Week – Main Street Shantung Maple

Posted on April, 06

Shantung’s are the only Maple to make the Texas Superstar list, and it’s no wonder why. Once established, it tolerates heat and drought and grows in our alkaline soil like a champ. The Shantung will only grow to about 25’ tall and 20’ wide and has a moderate-to-fast growth rate. It is a perfect shade tree for smaller landscapes and makes a great accent tree in larger ones. The dense canopy and delicate leaves are reminiscent of Japanese Maples, but these guys can take full sun and withstand our Texas summers. The fall colors of the Shantung Maple are superior, exploding with shades of gold, red, and orange, and will make your yard the envy of the neighborhood!
